Berthoud, France, circa 1860. Fine and rare large gilt bronze, hour and half hour striking carnage clock with remontoire, power reserve indicator and chronometer escapement. Gilt bronze, "Corniche" type, engine-turned, glazed on five faces. Silvered engine-turned with Roman numerals on a polished chapter, inner 8 day up-anddown sector, Arabic subsidiary seconds. Blued steel Breguet hands. Rectangular with turned pillars, going barrels both for the going and the striking train, hait hour remontoire, platform escapement with pivoted detent escapement, cut bimetallic balance, blued steel balance spring with terminal curves. Signed on the dial. In very good condition. Dim. 25 x 17 x 13 cm. Notes A similar clock is illustrated by Charles Allix in Carnage clocks, pp 112-113, plates V/12 - V/13. These very fine chronometer travelling clocks were produced by Auguste Louis Berthoud, fine chronometer maker and grandson of Louis Berthoud. Alphonse XIII (Madrid 1886-Rome 1941) Posthumus son of Alphonse XII, King of Spain from 1886 to 1931. Since 1923, he had to accept the Dictatorship of General Primo de Rivera. He left his contry after the Municipal Elections in 1931 which were won by the Republicans. Sorolla y Bastida, Joaquin - Born in Valencia on 27 February 1863, died in Cercedillo on 11 August 1923.
