Quare London No. 323, Friedberg (Germany), made for the Dutch Market, circa 1760. Fine silver quarter repeating watch. Double body, the bezel pierced and engraved with foliage, the back centred with a rosette and with alternated fluted and florally pierced and engraved sectors in a sunburst pattern. Silver champleve with Roman numerals and outer Arabic minute ring with arched divisions. Blued steel "poker and beetle" hands. Hinged gilt brass full plate with turned baluster pillars, fusee with chain, verge escapement, plain steel three arm balance, flat balance spring, gilt brass English style cock. Repeating on a bell by depressing the pendant. Signed on the dial and back plate. In very good condition. Diam. 53 mm. Notes During the second part of the 18th century, Friedberg in Germany, not far from Augsburg, where the cases were chased, was an important production centre of watches, mainly repeaters, made for the Dutch, the English and even the French Markets. They were made in the style of the country for which they were intended to be made and signed the the names of their most eminent makers. For more information about the watches made in Friedberg, see the article by Sebastian Whitestone, published in Antiquarian Horology, winter 1993, pages 145-157.
