Painted Silhouette of Notable Revolutionary War Figure Dr. Thomas Barnard, Jr., Massachusetts, late 18th/early 19th century, the silhouette painted in black ink on laid paper, with the name "Rev'd Wm. Barnard Salem" inscribed in pencil below the portrait, (toning), 4 7/8 x 3 3/4 in., in a period molded giltwood frame. Note: Dr. Thomas Barnard, Jr. (1748-1814) was the minister of the North Church of Salem from 1773-1814. During the Revolutionary War, Dr. Barnard, previously a loyalist, was instrumental in preventing bloodshed by intervening and bargaining with the British troops to turn back from their expedition to Salem from Boston to capture armaments reported to be in Salem on February 26, 1775, in an incident known as Leslie's Retreat. A typewritten letter from the Essex Institute of Salem dated January 26, 1965, providing a brief biography of the sitter, accompanies the silhouette.
