Alexander Rosell (British, 1859-1922) A New Toy Signed and dated "A... ROSELL 1908" l.l., titled and inscribed "Roselli [sic]/A New Toy" on the reverse, dedicated "To the E R Schmidt family" in pencil on the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 20 x 24 in. (50.9 x 61.0 cm), framed. Condition: Small area of craquelure, surface grime. Provenance: Gifted by Dr. A.J. Ochsner to Erwin Schmidt in 1920, then by descent. A remnant of paper saved in a plastic sleeve affixed to the frame backing reads, "This Picture to go back to the/Erwin Schmidt Family./Roselli/A New Toy" Surface grime. Old tack holes with small areas of paint loss in each of the corners. One in. area of craquelure just above the child's head.
