John White Allen Scott (American, 1815-1907) View from the top of Jackson Falls, N. H. October Morning. Monogrammed signature "JWAScott." l.l., artist's label affixed to the reverse, titled on a label affixed to the reverse. Oil on canvas, 14 x 20 in. (35.6 x 50.8 cm), framed. Condition: Retouch, minute punctures l.c., craquelure, surface grime. There is retouch in three narrow bands across the sky. The uppermost area of retouch measures 13 in. across from the right edge, 3 1/2 in. down from the top, about 1/8 in. in thickness. The second horizontal strip of retouch runs from the tree tops on the left across the mountain tops. The third runs along the near horizon line. There are spots of retouch along the top edge of the canvas, probably covering old frame abrasions. There is a minute pinhole in the canvas, located in the lower left quadrant 2 1/2 in. up from the bottom and 6 1/2 in. in from the left edge. There is a repaired abrasion (1/2 in.) in l.l. corner, with a small (1/8 in.) dent above that and another small dent in the center bottom. Craquelure is stable.
