Claude Dixon Coats (American, 1913-1992) Background Scene for Walt Disney's Lady and the Tramp Unsigned, production marks in the margins. Gouache and graphite on paper, sheet size 12 x 40 in. (30.5 x 101.6 cm), unframed. Condition: Tape residue to the margins, minor tears to edges, subtle handling creases. Provenance: Ex-collection of Disney artist Ralph Kent. Literature: "Claude Coats: Prototypical Imagineer," The 'E' Ticket , Issue #31, Spring 1999, page 6 (illustrated). N.B. Coats, a studio and concept designer for Walt Disney Imagineering, joined the Walt Disney Studio in 1935 as a background painter. In addition to Lady and the Tramp , he is credited with the background and color styling of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs as well as Fantasia . (1) A copy of The 'E' Ticket accompanies the lot. Scattered tack holes along the edges. Scattered nicks and tears along the edges. Handling creases. Tape residue verso, and inscribed with the same number "2079-2-63."
