John F. Francis(American, 1808-1886) - Elaborate oil on canvas still life with central bottles of cognac and wine surrounded by goblets, glasses, a wedge of cheese, and biscuits on a draped table, signed lower right "J.F. Francis Pt. 1854", 19 1/2" x 23 1/2". Francis was largely a self-taught artist who helped initiate the revitalization of still life painting in America, eventually producing some of our nation's most important examples.
