Attributed to Thomas Hewes Hinckley (American, 1813-1896) Traders Surprised on the Yellow Stone River Unsigned, titled or inscribed and identified "... From Cooper's novel...Thos. H. Hinckley/the Artist" on the reverse. Oil on panel, 15 x 17 in. (38.1 x 43.2 cm), framed. Condition: Retouch, craquelure, surface grime, mild warping of panel. The panel inscribed in pencil on the back, "Traders surprised on/the Yellow Stone River,/from Cooper's novel --/ presented to/Edmund Bak.../by/Thos. H. HInckley, the Artist" There is evidence of another painted label, with the inscription now obscurred.
