Jean Leon Gerome Ferris (American, 1863-1930) Law's Arrival in London Unsigned, identified on a label and with a copyright stamp from John Barrie & Sons, Philadelphia, on the reverse. Oil on academy board, 8 x 12 in. (20.4 x 30.5 cm), framed. Condition: Small paint losses at lower edge. N.B. This painting apparently served as the basis for an etching that illustrated William Harrison Ainsworth's book, John Law (Philadelphia: George Barrie & Sons, N.D.), which included as illustrations a portrait after Sir Godfrey Kneller and three etchings by Adrien Nargeot after paintings by J.L. Gerome Ferris. A label on the reverse titled "American Manufacture/Exported for Reproduction and to be Returned" lists George Barrie & Son as the place of return and the export date as "28 October 1897." Adrien Jean Nargeot was an engraver born in Paris in 1837.
