Colonial Coin Silver Porringer, Newport, c. 1740, Jonathan Clarke, maker, of typical form, with single openwork handle, monogrammed GMW, base engraved Mary Wanton, lg. 7 1/2 in., approx. 9 troy oz. Provenance: Gideon Wanton (1693-1767), was Governor of Rhode Island 1745-47 and 1747-48. He married Mary Codman (widow of Christopher Codman), c. 1718. Mary Wanton was the daughter of Gideon Wanton. two small breaks to openwork scrolls above monogram on handle. age typical light base dings, and a ding to side of body. light surface wear. side of body engraved Nancy Brayton to Thomas Brayton.
