Framed Calligraphy Couplet, Shen Baozhen (1820-1879), reads "Shuai li dao ren xue bai zhi xing, bo xue duo shi fang li qi shan," (Practicing social etiquette and philanthropy shapes one's spotless nature; Achieving erudition and versatility contributes to the appreciation of the merit of things), signed, two seals, mounted with brocade borders, framed and glazed, 61 x 8, 73 x 13 1/4 in. (frame). N.B. Shen Baozhen was a high official during the late Qing dynasty. In 1847 he achieved the highest degree in the Imperial Examinations ( ke ju ) and was later involved in the suppression of the Taiping Rebellion together with Zeng Guofan. He also played an important role in the Modernization movement in late 19th century in China. Shen's family was well-connected, other dignitaries include Lin Zexu, his father-in-law. Provenance: From the private collection of Shen Baozhen's fifth-generation granddaughter. Minor loss to the paper, no damage otherwise
