Noriko Yamamoto (Japanese/American, b. 1929) Untitled [60-4] Titled, signed and dated "...NORIKO YAMAMOTO 1960" on the stretcher, identified on a label from Gump's Gallery, San Francisco, affixed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 42 x 42 in., in a strip molded frame. Condition: Minor surface grime. N.B. Yamamoto obtained her BA and MFA at the California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland, from 1952 to 1957, where she studied with well-known Bay Area Abstract Figurative painters as Richard Diebenkorn and Nathan Oliveira. The black gestural strokes of the present work both evoke the "flying white" effect of Japanese calligraphy as well as the spontaneous mark-making sought by Abstract Expressionists. May benefit from a gentle cleaning.
