Charles Melville Dewey (American, 1849-1937) Cleeve Prior Eng. Signed "Charles Melville Dewey" l.r., titled l.l. Watercolor and gouache on paper laid on paperboard, sheet size 14 3/4 x 20 5/8 in. (37.5 x 52.4 cm), framed (without glass). N.B. There are partial labels on the backing paper from The Art Institute of Chicago and from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Sixty-fourth Annual Exhibition, 1894-1895. Although Charles Melville Dewey exhibited at PAFA regularly, no work by this title is listed in the exhibition record for that year (Peter Hastings Falk, The Annual Exhibition Record of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, 1876-1913 , [Madison, CT: 1989, Sound View Press]). The Annual Exhibition Records of The Art Institute of Chicago (Falk, Madison, CT: 1990, Sound View Press) lists a watercolor by Dewey titled Under the Greenwood as being exhibited in 1895, but no works bearing the title Cleeve Prior .
