Ernest Haskell (American, 1876-1925) James Abbott McNeill Whistler, 1898. Signed "Ernest Haskell" in pencil l.r., signed, monogrammed, and dated within the plate. Soft-ground etching on fine laid paper, plate size 10 5/8 x 6 5/8 in. (26.8 x 16.8 cm), unmatted, unframed. Condition: Margins 3/4 inches or more with deckled left and lower edges, pressed crease to left margin, toning. The sheet measures 14 x 9 1/8 in. N.B. It has been suggested that Haskell's two caricatures of Whistler led to his meeting the famous artist, and it was Whistler who introduced Haskell to etching. (1) Ernest Haskell will be the subject of an exhibition at Amherst College opening in late March 2011. 1. www.diverseayres.com/products.htm?id=172
