Rockwell Kent (American, 1882-1971) Drifting , c. 1917 Estate stamped and ciphered "ROCKWELL KENT" l.r., inscribed "Head of/a Col" in pencil on the mount u.r., and "Rockwell Kent/ Spots" in pencil on the mount reverse, identified on a label from Kennedy Galleries, Inc., New York (Inv. No. 36274) on the backing. Ink and graphite on chine colle mounted to illustration board, sight size 7 x 8 3/4 in. (17.8 x 22.2 cm), framed. Condition: Stain u.l., mounting bubbles l.l., loss to backing board u.l. corner. Provenance: Private Massachusetts collection. N.B. The drawing is rendered in the style of those Kent produced for publications such as Vanity Fair (circa 1916-1925) under the pseudonym Hogarth, Jr. These drawings, like the Th' Avenue (Skinner Inc., May 21, 2010, Lot 483), were created as whimsical decorations to illustrate the satire of George S. Chappell. Unlike Th' Avenue , which was created specifically for a satirical tale, this drawing, in reduced styling, served as one of several designs for the artist's reverse paintings on glass known as "Hogarth mirrors": used as headings for elongated, vertical mirrors, framed by artist Max Kuehne. We wish to thank Scott R. Ferris for his kind assistance with cataloguing the lot.
