Polychrome Paint-decorated Dome-top Box, probably New York state, early 19th century, dovetail-constructed rectangular box with wire hinged lid and iron lock and swing handles, decorated with brushed and sponged red, green, and white flowers, stripes, and swirls on a pumpkin-colored ground, lined with c. 1866, Buffalo, New York, newspapers, (shrinkage cracks on lid, minor paint losses, part of latch missing), ht. 11 1/2, wd. 28, dp. 14 in. Under black light there is no evidence of repaint, nor has the box been over-cleaned. The lid has a shrinkage crack with about 1/4 in. gap which is horizontally across lid, a smaller horizontal crack on lid, and the front and rear lid panels also with shrinkage cracks. The top portion of the iron latch is missing, minor scattered paint losses.
