John Sell Cotman (British, 1782-1842) View of Wales Signed and inscribed or dated "J. S. Cotman/..." l.l. Ink wash on Whatman wove paper, 8 1/4 x 4 7/8 in. (21.0 x 12.4 cm), framed. Condition: Mounted to window mat on all four sides. Provenance: Purchased from The Manning Galleries, London, 1970. N.B. A handwritten note on the frame backing paper suggests the date of 1802 for this drawing. Partial Whatman watermark "1794/WHATMAN" Inscribed,"John Sell Cotman/"Scene in Wales"/1802/Ex Manning (?) Galleries, London/Summer 1970" and with a label from Upton Art Galleries, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, both on the frame backing paper. The drawing is mounted to the front of French mat, and while it gives the illusion of being laid down, there is actually a window cut in the mat just slightly smaller than the drawing itself. The drawing is glued to the front of the mat but is not laid down in full. The glued edges measure perhaps 1/8 inch all around the reverse.
