Attributed to Laszlo Paal (Hungarian, 1846-1879) Figure in a Landscape Signed "L. de P..al" l.r. Oil on canvas, 22 1/2 x 33 1/4 in. (57.2 x 84.5 cm), unframed. Condition: Lined, retouch, craquelure, losses. Provenance: Acquired in the 1980s from a descendent of the Marquand family of Pinckney Street, Boston. Areas of retouch as follows: lower center with a round area measuring 1-1/2 in diameter, another smaller round spot measuring 1/2 inch diameter, and an L-shaped area at the hem of the figure's skirt measuring 1-1/2 inch each direction. Scattered dots of retouch to trees in upper left corner and across the sky. Areas of retouch and consolidation in the lower corners. A few minor paint losses to outer edges, probably from old frame abrasion. Area of craquelure to lower left. Original canvas weave is rough and its texture is visible under the paint. Work is heavily varnished.
