Thomas Hart Benton (American, 1889-1975) Construction Scene and an Illustration for the Nursery Rhyme "Hey Diddle Diddle"/A Double-sided Study Unsigned. Graphite on paper, sheet size 12 1/2 x 8 1/4 in. (31.7 x 21 cm), framed. Condition: Tape hinged to backing mat, losses along edges. N.B. Construction relates to comparable sketches of the early 1920s which were preparatory for such paintings as "Construction" (1923). Though less typical, Nursery relates to quick drawings known to have been done by Benton when he signed books or to amuse young children.
