Jules Pascin (French, 1885-1930) Dans le Café Signed "pascin" u. r. Ink with gouache on paper, 10 1/4 x 11 3/4 in. (26.0 x 30.0 cm), framed. Condition: Repairs, staining, creasing, rippling. Provenance: A New York estate. Inscribed "Wein Carton/Au...." on the reverse. Sheet hinged to backing mat in two places along top edge reverse and floated within the window mat. Nicks and wear to edges of sheet. Several repaired tears mended on the reverse with Japan paper or similar, as follows: approximately four small tears to lower edge (largest measuring 1-1/8 inch), one to right edge (3/4-in.), top edge with at least four areas of repair, the largest measuring 1-3/8 inch. Unable to examine the reverse top edge due to hinges. Staining to front along top edge and l.l. corner, creases to lower corners, paper with rippling, toning, and scattered thin spots. Old labels from prior auction and from Henri Heydenryk gallery, New York, and a photocopy of the inscription on the reverse of the drawing have been attached to the new frame backing paper.
