John Grillo (American, b. 1917) Abstract, c. 1952 Unsigned, inscribed "Torch" on the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 16 x 18 1/4 in. (40.7 x 46.4 cm), framed. Condition: Losses, lifting, craquelure, punctures, and subtle canvas rippling. Provenance: Purchased from the artist by a Weston, Connecticut, collector; through to the present owner. N.B. We wish to thank the artist for his kind assistance with authenticating the work. Approximately 20-30 losses of varying sizes to all quadrants with the largest area of loss to the l.r. quadrant measuring approx. 1 3/4 x 1 1/8 in. to the extreme height and width; three punctures--two to the u.l. quadrant and one to the l.l. quadrant- with the largest measuring approx. 1/4 x 1/4 in. in the l.l. quadrant; craquelure throughout with circular cracking; subtle rippling/canvas deformations; surface grime. The work may benefit from a cleaning.
