Augustus W. Buhler (American, 1853-1920) Fisherman on the Shores at Etaples. Signed, inscribed, and dated "A. Buhler/Etaples. Sep. 1890" l.l., with a partial label from Goupil's, New York, affixed to the frame. Watercolor on paper, sight size 13 3/4 x 10 1/2 in., framed. Condition: Not examined out of frame. N.B. Buhler resided in France from 1888 to 1890 to study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and the Académie Julian under Benjamin Constant. He later established a studio in Gloucester and became known for his paintings of local fishermen, particularly Man at the Wheel , 1901, which was purchased by Gorton Fisheries of Gloucester and served as the basis for their logo.
