Stephen Dod, Brass Surveying Compass, Newark, New Jersey, c. 1820, with 16 inch telescope and top mounted spirit level and 5 1/2-in. engraved silvered dial signed S. Dod, Newark , fleur-de-lis at North, East and South indicated by block letters, West with needle lifter, blued steel needle, outer ring calibrated 0-90 in four quadrants, inset spirit level, removable sighting vanes and walnut carrying case, lg. boxed 16 3/4 in. According to Drost, Clocks and Watches of New Jersey , p. 104, Stephen Dod (1770-1855) moved to Newark in 1817 where he was in the business of real estate and surveying. His maps of Newark drawn from his own surveys, appear in all Newark city directories from 1847-1863. brass in old surface, age consistent imperfections on silvered dial, lenses in undisturbed condition with sliding covers, period glass with putty refreshed, original box.
