Will J. Quinlan (American, 1877-1963) Portrait Bust of a Gentleman in Formal Attire. Signed and dated "Will J. Quinlan/1894" l.r. Charcoal and chalk on paper, sight size 20 1/2 x 15 in., framed. Condition: Foxing, toning. N.B. The date on this drawing, 1894, would make the artist about 17 years old at the time it was done. Biographical materials suggest that Will J. Quinlan, who was hearing impaired from age three, started art lessons at age eleven, and won a gold medal for drawing from the antique, in competition with adults, while studying at the Adelphi Academy in Brooklyn at age 13.
