Chippendale Carved Mahogany Block-front Slant-lid Desk, coastal Massachusetts, c. 1760-75, the blocked lid opens to an amphitheater interior of blocked and shaped drawers and valanced compartments flanking a secret compartment with carved prospect door, on conformingly blocked case and bracket feet, old replaced brasses, old refinish, (imperfections and repairs), ht. 41 1/4, wd. 39, dp. 20 in. Provenance: Papers found within the desk indicate a history in the Durfee family of the Tiverton, Rhode Island, area. repairs to base, piece on left inside of interior missing, left vertical side of lid with thumbmolding patch; first, third, and bottom drawers in case with patches at bottom where drawer bottom was worn away.
