Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (German, 1880-1938) Segeln Auf Das Meer [Sailboat on a Lake] , c. 1910 Initialed "ELK" l.l., identified on a label from Allan Frumkin Gallery, New York, affixed to the backing, inscribed "KNM6..." in pen and graphite l.l. on the reverse. Graphite on paper, sheet size 12 1/4 x 18 5/8 in. (31.1 x 47.3 cm), framed. Condition: Minor restored tears to bottom and right margins, minor skinning along top edge verso, tape residue and minor acid burn verso, subtle handling creases, deckled top edge. Provenance: Allan Frumkin Gallery, New York; Modern European & American Paintings, Drawings, Sculpture; & A Group of Contemporary Paintings, Drawings, Sculpture, Parke-Bernet Galleries, Inc., April 8, 1970, Sale 3020, Lot 101. Several scattered pinpoint-sized holes to paper, primarily to left side center, but also in the figure. Glue residue recto center right measuring 3/4 x 3/4 in, and center left measuring 1 x 1/4 in. Handling creases, especially at the corners l.l., l.r., and u.r. Small stain l.r. quadrant measuring 1/4 in. diameter. Soiling to edges. Minor foxing evident in u.l. corner. Verso with tape remnants c.r. and c.l., restored tears at bottom and right margins measuring 1/8 to 1/4 in., and with skinning at top margin, most likely from removal of old hinges.
