Hanson Duvall Puthuff (American, 1875-1972) Mantle of Autumn Signed "HPuthuff-" l. r., signature pentimento l.l., titled and inscribed "...24 x 30" on the reverse, identified on partial labels affixed to the stretcher and frame. Oil on canvas, 24 x 30 in. (61.0 x 76.2 cm), in a period Arts & Crafts frame. Condition: Craquelure, minor surface grime, subtle rippling. Provenance: Purchased from the artist in Pasadena, California; present owner by family descent. N.B. In the mid-1920s, Puthuff left behind a successful commercial art career to focus primarily on painting the vibrant Southern California landscape. The present work is a classic example of Puthuff's "en plein air" Impressionist approach and subject, depicting sycamores in the foothills. Subtle rippling to l.l. quadrant, craquelure to areas of impasto, may benefit from a gentle cleaning and having stretcher keys tightened, no additional condition issues to report.
