James Abbott McNeill Whistler (American, 1834-1903) Lot of Two Thames Views: Thames Warehouses, 1959, second state of two (Kennedy, 38); and Old Westminster Bridge, 1859, probably the second state of two (Kennedy, 39). Both signed and dated within the plate. Etchings on paper, plate sizes approximately 3 x 8 in. (7.5 x 20.3 cm), framed. Condition: Margins over 1 inch, toning and foxing (primarily to Bridge ), not examined out of frames. N.B. Both of these images were included in Whistler's Sixteen Etchings of the Scenes on the Thames , published in 1871. Both have margins of 1 1/4 inches or more with unobtrusive toning (though more prevalent to Bridge ). There is wear along the upper edge of the plate mark on Warehouses. Although they have not been removed from their frames, there are no other visible condition issues to report. Warehouse laid down on backing. Sheet size is 9 3/8 x 12 15/16 in. (23.9 x 32.9 cm). Inscribed in pencil "1798" and also numbered with various inventory numbers. Bridge is also laid down, and sheet is 9 3/4 x by approximatley 14 1/2 (24.7 x 37.0 cm), with slightly irregular edges, scattered foxing, and with central area, roughtly 6 x 10 1/2 in., light struck.
