Important Stumpwork Box, England, mid 17th century, overall decorated with biblical scenes to the lid and all four sides, depicting figures and camels in landscapes, the hinged lid with mirror to the interior and enclosing a fitted interior of compartments, pen trays, two bottles and a pair of inkwells, the removable tray with hand-colored print depicting figures near a riverbank, a house to the background, inscribed Sold by John Overton at the White horse at the Corner of Little Ould Bailey without Newgate reflected in the mirrored sides, the front enclosed by a pair of doors fitted with one long and three short drawers, with five secret compartments, set on flattened bun feet, ht. 8 3/8, dp. 11 3/4, lg. 15 5/8 in. The embroidery to the top has the majority of the wear and losses. The pieces to the sides are in better condition and with better color. The box itself is early though difficult to tell if period to the embroidery.
