Woman's Semiformal Surcoat, China, 19th century, embroidered in satin and Peking Knot stitch with butterflies, peonies, lotus, and roundels of similar motifs on dark blue silk ground, with ruyi scepters, pairs of coins, and peony blossoms floating on rolling waves at hem, sleeve bands of light blue silk embroidered with Buddhist emblems and peony flowers, framed with a pair of red silk bound foot shoes and two purses, 64 1/2 x 44 in. Provenance: Formerly in the private DAR family collection of President Theodore Roosevelt's first woman ambassadoress to China and Japan. in good condition; museum framed in silk
