Italian Viola, Florentine School, Ascribed to Giovanni Battista Gabrielli, c. 1750, bearing a manuscript label length of back 41.7 cm (16 3/8 in.) Provenance: Earl L. Hedberg (1915-2003), member of the Boston Symphony 1956-1982, The Minneapolis Symphony, The Cleveland Orchestra, and the Gabrielli Trio. Certificate: William Moennig & Son, Ltd., Philadelphia, April 25, 1956. String length 37.8 cm. Overall clean, original varnish in plentiful supply. Pegbox grafted, pegholes bushed. Top is doubled at bottom edge, no soundpost crack. Wing crack, bass side. Small repaired hairline fractures at saddle and neck set areas. Repaired hairline crack from lower lobe of bass ff, approx. 10 cm. Repaired hairline crack left of saddle, extending approx. 10 cm. Small areas of retouch at wings. Small hairline fracture on side of top button, approx. 1.5 cm. Bass side of button fractured and repaired but never broken off. Parallel hairline cracks in treble side C bout of back. One piece bottom rib intact.
