Durham Sterling Company (American, mid 20th century). Mid century modern sterling silver pedestal compote or bowl, attributed to the silversmith artist, Alphonse La Paglia (Italian, 1907-1953). Compote with streamlined modern aesthetic with slightly flaring rim supported by ball and hoop design above circular base. Hallmarked on bottom for Durham Sterling Company, "STERLING 6311". Height 4.25", diameter of mouth 5.5", diameter of foot 2.75". Total weight approximately 7.3 troy ounces. Note: La Paglia studied under the noted modern silversmith and designer Georg Jensen. The design found in this compote at times is attributed to Jensen as well and sometimes can be described as being "After Jensen".
