Maxwell Ashby Armfield (British, 1881-1972) The Shells Remain Signed and inscribed "MAXWELL ARMFIELD" l. l., inscribed "OP316" probably in a later hand l.l., titled, inscribed, and signed "...7th mi on (c)/ TRANSITION TO THE UNIVERSAL/ Maxwell Armfield R.W.S." in the artist's hand on the reverse. Egg tempera on panel, 14 7/8 x 11 1/2 in. (37.8 x 29.2 cm), matted, unframed. Condition: Craquelure, minor surface grime. Panel is taped to the arched mat with brown paper tape on the reverse. Surface grime, including scattered brown spots of foreign matter. Craquelure appearing in a vertical pattern to both front and back of the panel.
