William Jurian Kaula (American, 1871-1953) Clouds from the West (New Ipswich, New Hampshire) Signed "WILLIAM J. KAULA." l.r., identified on the artist's label affixed to the reverse. Oil on canvas, 18 1/4 x 22 in. (46.4 x 55.9 cm), in a period frame. Condition: Minor retouch, surface grime. Inscribed in pencil on the stretcher, "Given to Mararet Atwood by Lucy F. Grueby" and numbered "13178 Atwood," and with a label from George Busse, New York, on the back of the frame. Three small areas of retouch to the center along the bottom of the clouds, the largest measuring 5/8 inch. Surface grime with scattered drips.
