Reuben Ingraham Tall Clock, Plainfield, Connecticut, No. 90, c. 1780, 11 1/2-in. sheet brass engraved silvered dial plate signed in the arch Reuben Ingraham, Plainfield No. 90 surmounted by engraved portraits of a man and woman, Roman numerals with Arabic minutes, stylized floral spandrels, second's bit and recessed date dial, eight-day time and rack strike movement with wooden pendulum rod, brass-faced bob and powered by two period iron weights, walnut case with solid fret top, free-standing columns, waist door and recessed panel in the base, ht. 85 in. Note: Reuben Ingraham (1745-1811) was apprenticed to clockmaker and silversmith John Avery (1732-94) of Preston, Connecticut. See Heckscher and Bowman, American Rococo, 1750-1775 , p. 69 for a magnificent engraved and silvered Reuben Ingraham dial signed by the engraver, John Avery. Dial appears to retain the original silvering, original hands, pendulum rod and bob, weights, pulleys; case is likely a late 19th century replacement.
