Achille Guerra (Italian, 1832-1903) Salvator Rosa Painting in the Villa Borghese Gardens Signed "Guerra" l. l., inscribed, dated, and signed "...Roma 10 Giugno 1886/Da me dipinto/Achille Guerra" on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 17 5/8 x 31 3/4 in. (44.7 x 80.5 cm), framed. Condition: Paint losses primarily to lower edge, two pinhole punctures l.l., small split to canvas c.r., canvas deformation, varnish inconsistencies, surface grime. Provenance: The collection of Louis D. "Bud" Root (1922-2009), Southampton, New York. Full inscription on the reverse reads, "Salvator Rosa/nella Villa Borghese /Roma 10 Giugno 1886/Da me dipinto/Achille Guerra." There is a small slit in the canvas measuring 3/8 in. (1.0 cm), located center right, at the shoulder of the bishop. Varnish application is inconsistent, with touches of higher gloss applied in areas of shadow, such as on the painter's clothing, and the tree trunks. The two small punctures are located l.l. in the foreground under the umbrella, and they measure 1/8 in. and 1/16 in. There is a small (1/8 inch) paint loss center left in the shadow of the large tree.
