William Worcester Churchill (American, 1858-1926) Young Woman Reading a Letter Signed "... W. Churchill…" l.l., inscribed "Return to:/W.W. Churchill/23 Irving St./ Boston" on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 54 5/8 x 25 in. (140.0 x 63.5 cm), framed. Condition: Retouch, craquelure, surface grime. N.B. Born in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, William Worcester Churchill studied at the Boston Museum School in 1877 and later in Paris with Léon Bonnat. He established a studio in Boston on Irving Street. His canvases depicting lovely young women in elegant interiors were very much in keeping with Boston School colleagues such as Edmund Tarbell and William McGregor Paxton. Retouch to figure: to proper right forearm in an area measuring 7 x 1-1/2 inches at its maximum dimensions, a thin line of retouch to the edge of proper right cheek and neck, a small line (3/4 in.) to side of nose. The figure's face displays a rosie cast under UV. Old retouch at décolletage. Retouch to background in u.l. quadrant along the edge of the mirror, and to u.r. corner consisting of two parallel lines about 7 inches in length. Scattered retouch to background and at edge of canvas l.l.
