Attributed to Joseph Wood (American, 1778-1852) Portrait of a Young Man with a Book, c. 1820. Unsigned. Oil on wood panel, 15 1/2 x 14 in., in a period molded giltwood frame. Condition: Scattered retouch to figure, repaint to background, approx. 2 1/2 in. horizontal crack to panel l.l., from edge. Note: Images of the portrait were examined by the National Portrait Gallery, and it was the consensus of the curators there that this work of Philadelphia origin most closely resembled that of Joseph Wood among the painters working there around 1820.
