Sailor's Brass-bound Leather-covered Camphorwood Sea Trunk, China, early 19th century, rectangular trunk, the lid centered with an engraved pewter plaque "Peleg Simmons/New Bedford," the sides covered with black leather decoratively studded with brass tack borders, with brass swing handles on the sides, (minor imperfections), ht. 13, wd. 31 1/4, dp. 16 in. Note: Peleg Simmons was born in Tiverton, Rhode Island, in 1804. At the age of 19 he went on a whaling voyage out of New Bedford, Massachusetts from June 18, 1822 to April 27, 1823 on the ship George & Martha , and at age 21 from June 2, 1827 to July 7, 1828, on the ship Galeta . The New Bedford city directory later lists him as a laborer and a fisherman. He died, unmarried, November 13, 1871, at the age of 67.
