Sold for:
$338

Federal Maple and Pine Card Table, possibly New Hampshire, early 19th century, the shaped top above a single drawer joining four tapering legs, (imperfections), ht. 27 1/2, top wd. 39, top dp. 19 in. Literature: The Impecunious Collector's Guide to American Antiques , by John T. Kirk, Knopf, 1975, fig. 105. Note: As evidenced by this table's appearance, Kirk found it a good fit for his chapter called "Buy It Ratty and Leave it Alone." He writes of it on pages 112-113: "we should delight in and thoroughly enjoy what we have [as opposed to what we don't have]. It is true that this is not the way that this table originally appeared, but it will never be as it once was unless you start over, so if you cannot delight in the present leaf, you should ignore the piece entirely."
