André Delfau (French, 1914-2000) Set Design for Chantier , c. 1961 Signed "Delfau" l.r. Gouache on paper, 15 1/8 x 19 1/4 in. (38.5 x 49.0 cm), unframed. Condition: Tape-hinged to paper support. Literature: Donald Oenslager, Stage Design: Four Centuries of Scenic Innovation (New York: Viking Press, 1975), pp. 213-14. N.B. It has been said that André Delfau approached scenic design with the unfettered freedom of a painter. Chantier , a project for the Marquis de Cuevas Ballet, with choreography by Ruth Page, exemplified this approach. Previously Delfau had created many successful designs both for the de Cuevas company and for the Ruth Page Chicago Opera Ballet. However, upon the death of the Marquis Jorge de Cuevas in 1961, his dance company was dissolved, leaving the Chantier ballet unrealized.
