Five Grand Tour Portrait Busts Depicting Homer, Socrates, and Plato, Italy, mid to late 19th century, two terracotta: Plato and Homer after busts in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence, each on conforming socle, Plato with impressed label, ht. to 6; two additional depicting Homer: one alabaster, ht. 5 3/4, the other iron on a square black-painted slate base, iron ht. 6; and one white marble depicting Socrates, labeled in iron red and on a brass socle and later imitation marble columnar pedestal, marble ht. 3 3/4, total ht. 10 1/2 in. Provenance: A copy of a receipt from Jean-Paul Cottin Antiquités, Marché Vernaison, Paris, for the terracotta bust of Homer accompanies the lot.
