Attributed to William Matthew Prior (Massachusetts/Maine, 1806-1873) Portrait of a Student. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, the subject seen waist length with brown curly hair, brown eyes, and fair complexion, wearing a white shirt, black cravat and jacket, on a table behind him are an inkwell and a quill, 23 3/4 x 19 3/4 in., in a molded gilt-gesso frame. Condition: Small patch to background. Note: This portrait was always affectionately [though inaccurately] referred to as "Timothy Pick," reportedly as a reference to Timothy Pickering, an ancestor of the consignor's family and renowned Massachusetts politician of the late 18th century.
