Dorothy Tennant (British, 1855-1926) L'Amour Blesse. Signed and dated "Dorothy Stanley 1895" l.r., identified on a label affixed to the reverse. Oil on canvas, 12 x 21 in., framed. Condition: Surface grime, craquelure. N.B. Tennant was a student of Jean-Jacques Henner, and was a member of L'Atelier des Dames, a school for female painters (who were not allowed to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts) organized by Henner and fellow painter Carolus Duran. She exhibited frequently at the Grosvenor Gallery, which regularly featured works depicting nymphs and bathers in bucolic settings - subjects to which Tennant returned repeatedly. Tennant married Lord Henry Morton Stanley, the famed African explorer.
