One of America's first modernist painters, Konrad Cramer developed an aesthetic that fused American ideologies with the European artistic movements of Modernism and Cubism. He worked in a variety of mediums and created compositions that incorporated abstraction with traditional formats such as the still life. In 1911, Cramer emigrated from Germany to New York City where he became involved with the American modernists and formed a close friendship with photographer Alfred Stieglitz. In the mid-1930s, he took up photography himself, embracing experimental techniques, including solarization. Cramer lived and worked in both Manhattan and the Catskill artists' colony in Woodstock, New York.
