Paint-decorated Fireboard, probably Pennsylvania, late 18th/early 19th century, the mortise and tenon-constructed pine and poplar tiger-maple grain-painted frame with reeded ends and beaded liner and raised panel fancifully painted, the sky with a fleece of clouds and orange and yellow birds above a line of trees on a knoll with a red house to the left, the foreground suggesting flowering shrubs, ht. 40 1/4, wd. 48 1/2 in. Provenance: John Bereman, Geneva, Illinois, or David Pottinger, sold to Betty Willis. Then to Edith and Bernard Barenholtz in the early 1970s.
