Lorenzo Somerby (Massachusetts, 1816-1883), After Clarkson Frederick Stanfield (British, 1793-1867) Sleeper's Bay Signed and dated "Lorenzo Somerby, Boston, 1838" on the back of the panel. Oil on board, 11 1/8 x 15 1/2 in., in a molded gilt frame. Condition: Two scratches in the sky to the left of the mast. Note: The back of the panel is inscribed "Sleeper's Bay from Marryat's Novel Painted by Lorenzo Somerby Boston 1838." Frederick Marryat published The Pirate and Three Cutters in 1836, where this image, originally painted by Clarkson Frederick Stanfield and engraved for the book by Robert Wallis, was published.
