Francois-Nicholas Martinet (French, fl. 1760-1800) Perruche, des Indes Orientales and Lory, d'Amboine , c. 1765-83.. Plate 143 titled and inscribed "dessine et grave par Martinet/Perruche, des Indes Orientales." l.c.; Plate 518 titled "Lory, d'Amboine." l.c., with artist biography on Shreve, Crump & Low stationary affixed to the reverse.. Hand-colored etchings, sight size 9 1/4 x 7 3/4 in. (23.4 x 19.6 cm), matching hand- colored mats and frames. Condition: Not examined out of frames. N.B. Martinet created illustrations for Comte de Buffon's Histoire Natuerelle , an ornithological project began in 1749 and completed in 1704 after Buffon's death. Martinet was responsible for drawing and engraving 10,008 colored plates of birds and insects. The finished publication contained 973 fine hand-colored etched plates of birds, featuring many exotic parrots and rare game birds.
