Brown-glazed Snake Jug, August Blanck or John Jegglin, Boonville, Missouri, second half 19th century, the narrow neck and bulbous body with three applied snakes with differing patterns, one of which forms the jug handle, allover brown glaze with lines and spots cut out of the glaze before firing, ht. 5 1/2 in. Note: An example of a snake-decorated jug by August Blanck is pictured and described within a blog entry from March 23, 2011, on the website of the Missouri History Museum. In the entry, a reference is made to a John Jegglin jug "with three snakes, each with its own pattern - chevrons, scales, or spots," just like the present lot.
