Alexei M. Isayev S-75 Surface-to-air Missile System, Isayev Design Bureau, c. 1957, this example is the upper stage of the two-part missile V-750 that houses the liquid fuel, chamber burns a hypergolic mixture of triethylamine and xylidine with nitric acid as the oxidizer, constructed of mixed alloys, inspection marks in red, ht. on stand 40 in. Note: Alexei Mikhailovich Isayev was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, in October 1908. From 1957 to 1967 he designed engines that powered rockets carrying the first artificial satellites, the first man in space, and the first unmanned probes to the Moon and Venus. During the 1950s he worked on engines for surface-to-air missiles and air-to-sea missiles. This engine is for a S-75 Dvina, a high-altitude, command-guided surface-to-air missile. This model has become known worldwide as the missile that shot down the U-2 spy plane of Francis Gary Powers while he was flying over the Soviet Union on May 1, 1960.
